About Checkers Backpackers

Located in Singapore’s vibrant Little India neighbourhood, Checkers Backpackers offers cheerfully decorated budget accommodation in dormitories.

Rooms range in size from family rooms to multi-person dorm rooms. All rooms share the bathroom facilities. The rooms feature much needed air conditioning, individual power sockets and personal lockers.

The reception is open around the cock to assist guests with checking in and out and providing practical local information. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building, including the rooms.

A simple complimentary breakfast is served every morning. There is a communal kitchen available if guests want to prepare their own meals, but also some great dining options in the surrounding Little India neighbourhood.

The streets and alleys of Little India are popular with shoppers and sightseers. Families looking for a interesting day out can perhaps head to the theme parks on Sentosa Island, which is approximately six mile from Checkers Backpackers.

Positive Reviews

Pretty decent location

This was by far what guests most liked about this hostel. They mentioned that it was right in the centre of the city’s Little India district. This area was said to be very interesting in its own right, but in addition was quite central. This allowed guests to walk to many attractions in other central neighbourhoods and also access the nearby MRT transport system.

Friendly staff

Guests generally found the staff to be friendly and more than willing to help when it came to providing practical information to those new to Singapore.

Complimentary breakfast

Although it was described as very simple, guests were pleasantly surprised to discover that the hostel offered a free breakfast that could help them get some energy to start their day.

Negative Reviews

Serious problems with overbooking

There were an incredible number of reports from guests who were either moved to another property entirely due to overbooking, or who slept in dorms with a couple more people in them than should have been, usually sleeping on the floor.

Very poor standard of cleanliness and hygiene

There were far too many complaints about very unclean rooms and unhygienic conditions to ignore. The specific complaints were many, ranging from dirty sheets to mould in the bathrooms, but the general impression was that cleanliness was not taken seriously at the hostel.

On top of a karaoke bar

The hostel was said to be right on top of a busy karaoke bar. Of course this meant that there was quite a lot of noise until late into the night, affecting some guest’s ability to get a good night’s sleep.
